Am I entitled to a free NHS eye test?

Yes if you meet the following criteria:

  • You are under 16 years of age
  • You are 16 – 18 and in full-time education
  • You are in receipt of the following state benefits
    • Income Support
    • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
    • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
    • Working Family Tax Credit
    • Pension Credit Guaranteed
    • You are named on a valid H2 certificate
  • You are registered blind/partially sighted
  • You have diabetes
  • You have glaucoma or are considered to be at risk of glaucoma
  • You are aged 40+ and have a qualifying family history of glaucoma
  • You have been prescribed complex lenses under the NHS optical voucher scheme
  • You are aged 60+
  • You are a prisoner on leave from prison

Am I entitled to help towards the cost of spectacles and lenses?

Yes if you are:

  • Under 16 years of age
  • 16 – 18 and in full time education
  • In receipt of the state benefits listed above
  • Prescribed complex lenses
  • A war pensioner and need glasses because of your pensionable disability (you will need to send your prescription, receipt and war pension reference number to: Veterans Agency, Norcross, Blackpool, FY8 3WP)
